The holiday season is about giving gifts, not being tricked.
Gift cards are for friends and family, not payments. Don’t be fooled by the latest gift card scams. This can happen over the phone or on a malicious website. Gift card scams are common because anyone can buy them and everyone knows how to use them. Plus, a gift card is like cash; once you use it – it’s gone!
Recognize that it's fake if it is too good to be true or if you must pay a fee before claiming your prize. The IRS, the utility company, and computer support will NEVER call you and ask for a gift card. Don’t be deceived by urgent requests or emotional appeals; always regard these will skepticism.
During this busy season, slow down, stop and think before clicking. Verify the website is legitimate and only use reputable companies; talk to your friends and ask them to verify it with you. If anyone tells you to pay them with a gift card, that’s a scam.
