CO = Security: Janelle interviews Lucia Milica Stacey week of 11/15/2020
This episode of Colorado = Security features an interview by Janelle Hsia with Lucia Milica Stacey, Global Resident CISO at Proofpoint. Here’s a link to the entire podcast: https://soundcloud.com/user-465317241
Lucia is a frequent speaker and advocate of cybersecurity and one of the few people who possess both a law degree and technical/security knowledge. Before her role at Proofpoint, she was the VP, CISO & CPO at Polycom. Lucia is a self-described “professional student,” who first received a law degree and is now studying for her Master’s in Information Systems and Cybersecurity at UC Berkeley School of Information.
In the interview, Lucia discusses the differences between American and European privacy laws and practices, the overlap between privacy and data protection (securing the data), the need for technical solutions for privacy issues, and how her understanding of the law complements her work in cybersecurity. She emphasizes the need for companies to collect only the data that’s absolutely necessary for the product/service they’re providing. Lucia is also a huge advocate for technical people to translate technical jargon into business risks for the company in order to clarify the importance of privacy to company leaders. She knows that executives implement privacy safeguards more readily when they understand their impact on the business.
Lucia is a tireless advocate for privacy, and in addition to her work and studies, she is also an advisor to many different organizations, including Journey, NewCloud Networks, and NextGen Cybertalent, which strives to develop the next generation of cybersecurity experts. Additionally, she was a nominee for the 2020 SC Media Women in IT Security. Through all of these things, she advocates for the support and development of women in the cybersecurity field. Her mantra for women in this field is “raise your hand” and take on difficult challenges. In closing, Lucia reminds us that in many ways corporate America hasn’t achieved the basics of privacy and there’s still a lot of progress to be made.
