Introducing the IOPD Design Process Standard V 1.0

In January 2021, the Institute of Operational Privacy Design was formed. From its inception, the IOPD has been building itself as a membership-based nonprofit organization focused on developing a common, free, and comprehensive standard committed to protecting individuals’ privacy. Over the last two years, I have been committed to innovation where privacy and tech intersect, and I cannot express how delighted I am to finally introduce to you the IOPD Design Process Standard, the industry’s first standard for a repeatable and comprehensive process by which a company can reduce privacy risks. This is the first of two standards which covers the process by which an organization designs its products, services, and business process. The second standard, which we’ll be working on this year, will cover the product, service, or business process. In essence, by adopting the Standard, organizations can reduce the complexity of the overall privacy by design process and create significant efficiencies, thereby reducing cost and increasing customer trust.

The original purpose for creating the Standard was frustration with the lack of privacy certifications. While there certainly ought to be more certification opportunities for professionals, more pressing is the glaring need for consumers to trust that a “privacy-friendly” company is actually putting privacy first. Companies that understand why privacy is important build trust and transparency with their clients. But how can consumers possibly know who is legit and who isn’t? That is where the IOPD Design Process Certification comes in.

We are currently seeking early adopters of the Standard and will soon have a live, recorded public webinar to present and discuss the Standard. Details to follow. We will also be taking steps towards developing detailed training on the Standard for ambassadors, volunteers and others. Keep an eye out for new IOPD Design Process Standard #privacytraining in the future!
